Once again it is time to pack up the kids, load the car, grab the dog, and hit the road, its long weekend time! Next to the July 1st long weekend Labour Day weekend is the busiest weekend to travel, and could potentially cost you the most as well.
In your travels this weekend keep in mind that most consumer goods such as gas, food, and building supplies either don’t go on sale or they go up in price. For example the gas stations usually raise the price of gas on Thursday nights before a long weekend to catch the early travelers. The average increase is 3.7 cents per litre; they will increase again on the Friday for a total increase of up to 8.5 cents per litre not returning prices back to normal until Sunday at midnight. So for those looking to head out on the road this weekend make sure you get your gas by Wednesday at the latest.
Another way to keep your costs low is to look at flyers ahead of time and take advantage of sales in your area before you go. Usually the markets and grocery stores in cottage country are on a different sale schedule than city stores, this is to drive revenues to their busy seasonal times. Finally, please make sure that any last minute building is done before this weekend as most hardware stores in cottage country will not waive the delivery charge this time.
So get out there, load up the kids, fight the traffic, and enjoy your fun in the sun, but please try and save some money along the way.
