Kids all around the country are heading home after the final school bell of the year. Now that the rugrats are home for the summer season, it’s up to you to keep them entertained for the better part of 2 months. While you’d like to take the kids on roller coasters, through every national park across the continent and beyond, we all know about the realities of setting a reasonable summer budget.
A little bit of planning now will go a long way towards a great summer vacation – whether you’re hitting the open road or staying local this summer. Really look at your finances and decide how much you’re able to spend on summer activities. After you’ve done that, here are some excellent ways to have a lot of family fun in the summer – all within a reasonable budget.
Provincial Parks
Canada has an excellent parks system. Whether you want to swim, camp, hike, fish or picnic, there is something for every outdoor-bound Canadian. Check the park website in your province for lists, maps and resources for how to get the most of our the Canadian wilderness this summer.
Minor League Sports
Chances are, there is a minor league baseball club close to your town. While they’re not the Blue Jays, minor league teams are always a reasonably priced way to spend a summer afternoon. With ticket prices around $11, it’s about the same price as a movie – but with the added bonus of getting outside and hearing the crack of the bat.
The Great Canadian Road Trip
Cheaper than flying the entire family, the road trip seems like a permanent part of Canadian summer plans. Load up the family into the car, check the maps and bring plenty of snacks. With high gas prices, the road trip isn’t as economical efficient as it once was, but it’s a seminal part of growing up. Remember the fun (and fights) in the backseat as a kid? Bring all that fun to your family – and control the budget – with a great road trip.
There are plenty of other ways to have fun this summer with your kids. It’s all about taking advantage of what’s around you, and spending time together as a family. Whatever you’re up to, remember to keep your budget in mind and stick to it. The rest will all follow!
