Man, have we ever been spoiled this year, we have had very little snow, spring like temperatures, and more sunshine then I can remember. But it’s here; winter has finally slapped us right in the face. We went from plus ten temperatures to minus twenty seven celsius with the wind chill in a matter of four days. Talk about extreme weather. It’s obvious that the weather has changed and you don’t need me to tell you especially if you have been outside lately. I’m not going to write about the weather, I actually want to give you some advice as to how to handle the cold especially if you get caught in it.
In the past two days I have had two friends get caught in the cold due to car malfunctions. Are you prepared for the cold should your car not start or maybe you lock your keys in it? Recently I had a friend of mine get stuck in a parking lot at 2:30 am his car not starting, no one else around, and a two hour wait for a tow truck. What do you do?
Well, I will tell you what I have done now. I have prepared a car emergency kit which includes:
- Jumper cables
- Blanket
- Flash light
- Matches
- Candle
- Hat and gloves
- Trail mix snacks (just in case)
To some this may be extreme but you never know what can happen, or how long it will take someone to come and help you out. This kit does not take up a whole bunch of space, it all fits in a very small bag that I can keep in my spare tire compartment in my trunk. Remember when it is this cold, frost bite can set in as quickly as 7 minutes.
So I leave you with one question, are you prepared if your car stops working? Remember CAA can’t keep you warm while you wait!
