Wait – don’t turn that channel. We’re about to tell you how you can save serious bucks on your next TV bill!
If you’re currently paying a Canadian TV-provider a monthly fee for service (almost all of us are) there’s a great chance you could be getting a better deal. That’s right. And the best part? If you don’t count the time it takes while waiting on hold, it should only take you about 5-10 minutes.
My story:
About a month ago, I was talking with my father-in-law about cable bills (exciting, right?) and we got on the topic of monthly bills. I found out that he was paying about $25/month less than I was, for the exact same service. After he was done laughing at me, I got on the phone with my TV company to ask them why.
Long story short, they told me my father-in-law was on a ‘promotional deal’. When I pressed a little further (literally 30 seconds worth), they offered me the same promotional offer – a $25/month savings!
It was that easy, and my account was updated to reflect the new rate – they even made it so that current month’s bill would be less.
The Math:
$25 less / month x 12 months = $300.
That’s a $300 annual savings for 10 minutes of my time.
How you can do it:
If you want to pay a little less on your cable bill, it’s important to shop around. The big Canadian cable companies have a lot of wiggle room in their ‘customer service’ department. Think of it like the squeaky wheel getting the grease. Take a look around at some competitor’s rates and find one that has similar coverage for less than you currently pay. When you’ve got that, call your current provider and ask if they can match it. Most often, that’s all it will take.
Far too often, people are timid to negotiate their bills and wind up paying much more than they should. When you factor in an entire year of over-paying on your TV bill, it really starts to add up. Wouldn’t you rather pay less than you are, for the same exact service? We thought so.
Take a look around for deals (even at other companies) and use them to your advantage. Don’t be shy when asking for a deal, and as long as you remain polite, but focussed on what you want, you should be in luck.
Bonus Tip:
Ask them if there are any other promotions going on. Chances are they can opt you into a preview of movie channels, sports or something else. All it takes is calling and asking!

As a person who worked for a big cable company I know this is great advice. People have a tendency to just pay their bill each month without any thought.
You can always call up and get a promotion on one of your products ie. call in May for a discount on your tv, then call in June for a discount on your internet, then call in July for a discount on your phone service.
Also, be aware of what the competitors are offering because every company has a department that specifically tracks what the competitors are offering so they know if you quote the specific advertisement you will be able to get a similar offer.
One more thing – if you can qualify always switch to the commercial service rather than the personal service because the prices are lower, the service is better and the response time is a lot quicker.
Hope this helps!
