In one word: Nicely.
People hate bill collectors, I mean nobody ever wants to talk to them. Why would you? They have a nasty reputation and all they want is money you probably don’t have to give them, right? Maybe.
Let me flip it around for a minute. I did their job a long time ago, it isn’t glamorous, nice or sexy. For lack of a better word, it sucks. Society looks down at you like you are nothing. I remember talking to a woman who was a dental hygienist about a credit card debt and she was really talking down to me. I mean she was cruel. And there I was at the time asking myself, “but this lady scrape’s garbage off people’s teeth, what makes her better”?
Here’s the thing. Bill collectors call people who are already pretty bummed out to remind them to pay their debts. They all have very tough targets and quota’s. They also have bosses breathing down their necks about hitting their numbers. It’s a hard job.
Think about it from the perspective of a bill collector for a minute, and the next time one calls you, regardless of their tone, be nice to them.
I’m not saying sing like a Canary and answer all their probing questions about your money; that can be very, very damaging, but at least be polite to them and realize they are a person too. On the other hand, don’t take any crap abuse from them either. You have the right to hang up if they step out of line.
I’ll get into more into what’s good or bad to talk about with them in another blog post later.
