I wanted to share some tips with you about how you can save some money this winter. Most people around this time are looking at buying new winter clothes, tools and supplies. We don’t need to purchase these items every year.
What I like to do around this time is an inventory. There is myself, my wife, and two small children at home. I usually start in the garage; is my shovel still good, do I have some salt. Most years I don’t have to buy anything other than salt for the driveway, and I usually do this at the end of the previous year to save on the purchase price. As the season changes from winter to spring these things go on sale.
From there I move into the front hall closet! This is the fun one; this is where you find out what you need to spend. It starts with a winter garment fashion show with the kids; do the jacket and snow pants still fit? Are the hat and mitts still in good shape? My general rule of thumb is that every two to three years it’s time for a new coat and pants. Don’t let your kids convince you that they need a new one every year. The hard one is boots; most children will need new boots every year. I have found a great way to save on the cost of new boots. Each year in the spring all children’s footwear goes on sale, usually a savings up to 50% or more. For the cost of one pair you can buy the next two years worth of boots.
If you keep this cost saving measure in mind you will not have to spend a large sum of money as the warm turns into cold. I want you to think about the things you can do to keep the cost savings down as the winter months are right around the corner!
