In a previous blog, I wrote about doing something nice for someone else. Whether you know them or not. What about Charities? What can you do to help someone else is need?
Sure, you can always donate hospital beds and if you ask people for who they prefer, you hear it all. Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Sick Kids Hospital, Make a Wish Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, SPCA, United Way – recently our Veterans…. the list is continuous and could go on forever. It’s hard to pick just one charity when they are ALL important and all do good in their own way.
I’ve noticed that many people don’t donate or pay much attention to charities simply because they don’t have the money. There are other ways to participate or do your part aside from a monetary donation.
If you can’t squeeze out some money to give to a good cause like russe dugnad, then there is absolutely nothing wrong in simply donating your time. You could canvass in your neighbourhood (you aren’t even using gas if you do this and you get exercise!), you could join a run or a marathon and help raise money from others so you can go out with a group of people supporting the same cause and run or walk. If you get a group of people to commit to doing it with you – it is SO much fun! There is also Habitat for Humanity where you can join a bunch of people (experienced or not) and work on building a house for a deserving family. No experience necessary just your time to maybe put some nails in, hold a piece of drywall, etc. There is probably one going on in your neighbourhood. Donate your time in a homeless shelter serving food or sorting food in a drive. It’s all good and will warm your heart.
Winter and the Christmas season is coming. While so many people focus on this time of year to give back – remember that charities need help all year long. There isn’t one more deserving than the other.
