There I said it, and you know it’s true. Cable TV is mindless crap.
I haven’t watched a cable TV program in 6 months now. I don’t miss it at all. Here is why I think cable TV is bullshit.
- You need to be a slave to the clock and be there at a certain time to watch a show
- If you don’t want to be a slave to the clock the cable company will happily sell or rent you a PVR that will let you record a bunch of shows.
- A 1 hour program is usually 20-25 minutes of programming and the rest of your time is spent watching marketers with deep pockets trying to sell you shit you don’t need or preying on your insecurities.
- The content on cable TV is shit. Reality shows showcasing America’s biggest morons, talk shows gossiping about mindless crap, news, which is really 99.9% all bad news that doesn’t affect me anyways. If there is a meteor hurtling towards earth I need to know about, I’m sure I’ll hear about it from a friend on Twitter or Facebook.
I admit it; I do have basic cable for my daughter to watch Treehouse occasionally. But there are no commercials, and the content is reasonably educational, or at the very least contains some basic life lesson about being a good person.
A year ago my cable TV bill was around $130/m with all the HD channels, PVR rentals and so on. With my basic package I’ve cut my bill by 2/3.
I’m serious; I have virtually nothing in the way of channels. My family complains all the time when they come over and can’t watch something. But so what? They are a perfect example of what’s wrong with cable. My dad is too fat and needs to get exercise, and my brother watches too much sport. So I really don’t care.
I don’t miss it at all. There is Netflix, YouTube, TED talks and the good old PS3. All commercial free, and at no to little cost.
Now that I think about it, I’m going to cancel my cable. My daughter can watch Dora on Netflix for free.
