If you have ever dealt with a bill collector, you know that they can be quite ignorant.
Being a previous collector myself, I know what it’s like in that environment. It’s not fun. Collectors are not bad people, well most of them anyway. What some people don’t understand is the pressure they endure during their work day.
Most collection agencies should come with revolving doors because the turnover in its employees is quite high. It’s a do or die kind of scenario. If you do well, you can stay, if you don’t, then off you go, and most times it’s to the next collection agency that is hiring.
I’ve seen many bill collectors walked right out the front door on a Friday, with their belongings in a box only to learn they are are working somewhere else on the following Monday. It’s a tough job. Credit card companies want better performance from their collection agencies, and all for a lower cost.
Everybody has a job to do and some take it to the next level. I understand the pressure on a collection floor but some like to threaten people with disgusting threats like “I am going to come and take your house from you” or “you stole from my client, you’re a thief”.
I once overheard a guy at a collection agency I previously worked for say “ you’re Italian aren’t you? Grapes are ready, go stomp on some and make some money to pay back the money you stole”. Like really, are you serious? Those kinds of people clearly have issues.
We here at Total Debt Freedom work with a lot of collectors, some good, some bad, some absolutely horrible, then we have the ones we go to when the job needs to get done. (you know who you are and we truly love you)
So to those that are dealing with collection calls, don’t take the threats personally, you’re just a file that owes money, they don’t know you personally, so don’t take it personally. It’s the job.
