For those of us in Southern Ontario we have been quite lucky by having a mild winter so far. Some of us were hit with quite the snow storm all day Saturday. It’s finally starting to look like Winter out there. Let’s take a look at some ways to help keep the heat in and the cold out of your home.
1.) Stop Drafts! There are several Cost efficient ways to stop the drafts coming under your door. You can either invest in a Draft stopper (some places call them snakes) or you can simply roll up a towel and lay it across the bottom of the door. If you are crafty you can make one yourself by sewing a fabric tube, filling it with sand or kitty litter and then putting that across the bottom of the door.
2.) Use a programmable thermostat. Why are you paying to heat your house when you aren’t even in it? If you leave your house at 7am and home at 5pm – lower your thermostat a couple of degrees during that time and could save yourself 1 to 3% of your electrical bill
3.) If you have a ceiling fan make it spin the other way! Most people use their ceiling fans in the summer to push down cool air, As we all know, heat rises. So if you switch your fan the other way it will take the heat that has risen and now re-spread it across the room to help keep it warm.
4.) Get thick curtains for the southern faced rooms. Open up the curtains during the day and let the sun warm up the room. In the evening- close the blinds to keep the heat in. If you want to renovate your windows, the experts at Super Sash Windows can help you choose designs to complement the appearance and comfort of your house.
5.) Turn down your thermostat just a couple degrees. If you get cold – put on a sweater or snuggle under a blanket. By keeping your house a little bit cooler it can help save you money every month!
Just think – all that money you are saving on your energy bills every month you can put towards paying off your debt!!
